Soleil kicked a can as he walked down the sidewalk, sending it skittering into the street to be crushed flat by an oncoming car. He dug his front claws further into his sweatshirt pockets, not able to keep out the chill of the early morning. His weary light-blue eyes squinted into the meager sunlight, his lower jaw drooping with fatigue. Soleil carelessly spit out his flavorless gum onto the sidewalk, stomped on it with his worn shoes, and fished a new piece out of his pocket. Why wasn't he flying? he asked himself. Oh, right. Ever since that stupid fog showed up and covered the land, flying's been out of the question. Soleil srunched up his face as if he smelled something sour, ruffled his feathers, and kept walking down the lonely street. All the shops were closed, he observed. No streetlights on, also. No pets or people combing the sidewalks as they usually did. And, that other car that squashed the can he kicked; he hadn't seen another car since. Soleil shivered--and not from the cold. Where was everybody?

Stormstripe grumbled as he stepped outside. That darn fog was still there. His best friend, Arctica, walked up behind him. "Still there?" she asked. He nodded, then stepped out. It had been way too long, cooped up inside. He was going out. As he went out the door, something crashed into him from the side! It was a chair on wheels! "Okay, this is getting too weird." he thought. Then the chair rolled away into the fog. As he watched it go, Stormstripe paused to think about the fog for a bit. It was totally unexpected. It was way too thick to see more than a few meters away from you at a time. It completely blocked out the sun's light. With that thought he shivered, then continued. It was too cold for him and too warm for Arctica and too damp-no, wet-for both of them. And because of it, he had had to stay in for more than a week. He felt a tap on his shoulder and looked around. Arctica was standing behind him smiling. Stormstripe smiled back. Just then the wind came up. Normally it would blow away this fog, but it just made it thicker. Arctica grabbed his hand. "We should hold onto each other so we don't get lost." she said. He nodded, then realized she couldn't see him. "Yep." he said. "And I think we should head back home." Then he realzed that he didn't know where home was now, with the fog so thick. He tapped the ground beneath him. It felt like road or sidewalk. He started walking while guiding Arctica. "If we keep walking, we're bound to find something." he said. After about an hour, he wasn't so sure. The fog was so thick he couldn't see things a foot in front of his face. He was tired, and his feet were sore. The fog had made his hand slick, so sometimes Arctica lost her grip and he had to find her again. To make matters worse, nobody else was out and about and they hadn't found any buildings. All they had seen was a park bench. He walked a few more feet, then crashed into something feathery. He looked at it. It was a rather annoyed-looking White-Mane Gallor.
